Killer Instinct 3

Conker playing Killer Instinct on a Game Boy

Rare gave out Christmas cards in 2007 with Banjo Kazooie opening gifts. And near the fireplace was a stocking with KI3 on it.

The following Q&A is quoted from Rare's scribes section on their website from June 25, 2007

Yo, wazzup RARE,
Since my infant days as a toddler I have been fascinated with the video games world, watching my big sisters playing the Super Nintendo endlessly. But the most amazing games in visuals and overall gameplay were the games Rare created. Such games as Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct are definitely worth being recognized as perfect specimens of nostalgic excellence. And then things got better with the introduction of the good ol' N64. Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, GoldenEye, Diddy Kong Racing and the list goes on and on. And CONKER'S BAD FUR DAY, pure gaming perfection, the most excellent game ever. EVER I TELL YOU. Truly throughout my life I have experienced the guiding hand of Rare. But still, I question you Rare, as is man's inquisitive nature. Here are my questions. So here ya go... ready... good.

Does Rare have any plans of making a new, edgier, and stylistically better Killer Instinct game, be it on a home console or on arcade machine?
What about a new Mr. Pants game? Or Jet Force Gemini? Huh... well, tell me, huh?
Also, I think you guys should make some RPGs, good ones, not Final Fantasy knock-offs.
I guess that's it, thanks for listening to me.
Tom from S.A. Australia
P.S. Please put this letter on your website.

Rare Reply: All that build-up, and then it comes crashing down into the anticlimax of "are you making KI3 or JFG2 or an RPG"? I find myself irretrievably ensnared in the chest-high brambles of disappointment, and if I'm in a bad mood for the rest of this Scribes then it's all your fault.

Purely out of contractual obligation, no, we're not working on KI3, no, we don't have a secret team in the basement finishing off JFG2, no, we're not brainstorming an exciting sequel to It's Mr. Pants and traditionally we're not big players in the RPG market either. Until we're ready to unveil some of the games beyond the new Banjo that we are working on, why not go back and sample some prime Rare goodness from the archives such as NES classics Time Lord or Super Glove Ball? (Right, that's the last we'll see of him.)

Conker playing Killer Instinct on a Game Boy

Several jokes were made by Rare and Microsoft about KI3, hinting at a possible sequel for the Xbox 360. TotalVideoGames reported a retail demo disc of Conkers: Live and Reloaded contains a Killer Instinct logo with a date of 200X. Microsoft later on admitted it was a gag.

The following Q&A is quoted from Rare's scribes section on their website from Oct 19, 2004

You've heard it all before and been asked a 1,000,001 times, but with the release of Mortal Kombat Deception, DOA: Ultimate & Tekken 5, do you think that Killer Instinct 3 would be a competitor?

Those games have been in the making for some time now and all 3 have had screenshots. Because of this I have to come to the conclusion that Rare is NOT currently making KI3, as it would be silly not to at least put a teaser, as in some kind of render or screenshot.

It is disappointing as I believe that all of Rare's current games really are intended for the younger gamers, whereas the majority of gamers are aged in their late teens - early 20s, which is a statistically proven fact. This would go to show why MK Deadly Alliance was a massive success.

It would certainly be one of the better fighting games out there if KI3 was there... but is it even in the pipeline for a current-gen console release?

Really hoping for a response to this...

Rare Reply: I thought you'd already come to the indisputable scientific conclusion that we aren't making it? So why are you asking if we are? Have some consistency, man!

Once more, with feeling: yes, one day we may well make KI3, it's entirely possible, but at this particular moment in time it's not happening. There are various reasons for this, none of which have anything to do with Mortal Kombat. But rest assured that if and when development begins, and we reach a point where we have something that we're happy to announce to the public, then that's what we'll do - rather than, say, lying and persisting in keeping it hidden for no good reason.

As a side note, I'd love to know what made you decide that Conker: Live & Reloaded (blood, swearing, mutilation) and Perfect Dark Zero (people being shot in the face) are "intended for the younger gamers".

The following is an older response from Rare to a frequently asked question (quoted from Rare's old website, before Microsoft bought them out)

When's Killer Instinct 3 coming out?

Despite what other 'sources' might suggest, we haven't been keeping KI3 or any other fighting game under wraps all this time. We haven't even decided if or when such a thing is going to happen. It may well do at some point in the future, but right now we've got plenty of other projects to focus on.

As far as I know Rare owns the rights to all the Killer Instinct franchise. So will they ever make the long awaited part three? Depends on how well they think it may sell. I personally can't see this really succeeding unless they make a arcade machine to help promote it. However, arcades aren't exactly doing so well these days and fighting games aren't as popular as they once were. However, Mortal Kombat has been revived quite a bit lately and Street Fighter's 20th anniversary is coming up and many suspect it may get a forth sequel soon. So, its possible that the revival of those two fighting games and how well they do might entice Rare to put out Killer Instinct III. However, since Rare is now owned by Microsoft you won't see it on any other console but the Xbox 360.
